Meet some Of Our Volunteers!Volunteer Opportunities

Vote for School Board Campaign

Task:

Volunteers will work in the community on the front lines to spread the word and communicate the importance of voting for the School Board in Districts 2, 4, 6, and 8.

Time Frame:

March 1, 2011 through May 17, 2011

Commitment:

2 hours a week (based on volunteer availability)

Requirements:

Must work with community coordinators to identify and maintain communication throughout the campaign
Volunteers should be willing and able to conduct door to door community canvassing and/or make phone calls
Volunteers should also be willing and able to distribute and collect pledge cards, voter registration forms, surveys, door hangers, and voter education guides.

Board Watcher

Task:

Evaluate the governance process of the Pittsburgh Public School Board according to the guidelines and practices outlined by A+ Schools

Time Frame:

Ongoing

Commitment:

Attend 1  hour training (They occur monthly)
Attend at least 1 school board meeting a month for a period of 6 months
Complete a board watch report during each board meeting and return it to us within 24 hours

Requirements:

Must be a resident of the city of Pittsburgh
Must be willing to be a neutral and objective evaluator

School Works Volunteer

Task:

Interview principals, counselor or teachers of  Pittsburgh Public Schools according to the guidelines and practices outlined by A+ Schools

Time Frame:

All interviews will take place in the fall months during the workday.; Volunteers need to be available for at least one appointment during this time frame.

Commitment:

Attend 1.5 hours of training during the end of September where you can sign up for an interview time and place
Conduct a 1 hour interview with a staff member of Pittsburgh Public Schools using the School Works interview tool
Return the completed interview tool to us

Requirements:

  • Must not have a child attending the school where your interview is conducted
  • Must be willing to be a neutral and objective data collector

Community Meeting Facilitator

Task:

Facilitate small table discussions during community meetings, take notes and report out on the conversation

Time Frame:

Ongoing as meetings are scheduled

Commitment:

Attend and facilitate or take notes during a 2 hour meeting

Requirements:

Must be willing to be neutral and objective when facilitating and recording the thoughts and opinions of the group

General Volunteer

Task:

Other tasks such as making phone calls, filing, data entry, helping to set-up for events, participating in focus groups, organizing a group of people to attend a training or event, etc. We are also open to hearing your ideas for a way you’d like to volunteer.

Time Frame:

Ongoing as needed

Parent as Media Contact

Task:

Provide comments or quotes to the media regarding issues related to education or Pittsburgh Public Schools

Time Frame:

As needed per the request of the media

Requirements:

Must be a parent of a Pittsburgh Public School student
Must be willing to follow up with media inquiries as appropriate
Opinions and perspectives of parent media contacts are their own and do not necessarily represent A+ Schools.
