At A+ Schools, we advocate and push for educational equity and excellence in Pittsburgh’s Public Schools. Resources are dedicated to educating the public, increasing awareness and engaging the community in efforts to advance change. In order to achieve these goals, we work closely with parents, volunteers, the community, and especially students. These individuals make the work possible and provide A+ Schools inputs for effective strategies to attain these goals.
TeenBloc is our youth leadership program that works directly with students. TeenBloc has been known in the community as a coalition of student leaders and organizers in Pittsburgh’s high schools. The main goal of this coalition is to raise the student’s voice and create positive change in schools. The program advocates for students and at the same time teaches students to advocate for themselves.
This summer, A+ Schools under its TeenBloc program will focus specifically on engaging students in advocacy and leadership development with an exciting summer program: Youth Organizing Academy. During this week-long program, students will have the chance to learn skills to develop and enhance their advocacy abilities, increase their knowledge of relevant issues around equity in education, and build leadership skills that will equip them to create positive change in their schools and communities.
By the end of this program, students will:
- Possess skills and tools to advocate on behalf of themselves and issues that affect their schools and communities,
- Understand various organizing tactics and approaches,
- Gain the ability to understand and analyze an issue,
- Establish a network of allies, and
- Understand their rights and influence within the educational system.
The Youth Organizing Academy will be held from August 7 – 11, 2017, at A+ Schools’ office. Lunch and transportation (Port Authority ConnectCard) are provided for participants.
Students in grades 9 – 12 are encouraged to sign up today! If you are interested and looking for more information, please contact:
