Focus and Mission: Board is focused on achieving its goals
- A Focused Board:
- Manages time effectively
- Is focused on ways to achieve the goals of the district’s strategic plan
Transparency: Board processes are accessible to the public
- Transparent Governance:
- Is physically and intellectually accessible
- Provides the public with an agenda online and in person
- Clearly presents information in an understandable way
Conduct: Conflict is managed respectfully
- Desirable Conduct:
- Conflict is handled in a respectful manner
- Comments made are related to the discussion and inquiring, challenging or solution oriented
- Comments made are not sarcastic, name-calling, contemptuous or accusatory
Role Clarity: Board provides policy leadership and oversight
- PPS Board Role:
- Regularly review and as necessary, revise and adopt new policies that move the district forward
- Manage the superintendant, not day to day activities of staff
- Discuss the overall impact of the budget, not line items
Competency: Board members are informed
- Competent Board Members:
- Are prepared for meetings
- Seek information from a variety of sources
- Base opinions on information in research, data, policies, effective practices
- Do not base opinions on personal feelings or sole needs of their constituency
*These indicators of good governance were developed through a public meeting with over 150 community members, focus groups with members of the general public, teachers, school board members and superintendants as well as literature review. For more information on governance, click here.
