Board Watch Volunteer Application

Board Watch is a grassroots effort established by A+ Schools involving volunteers who are trained to observe Pittsburgh Public School Board meetings. The city of Pittsburgh residents who serve as Board Watch volunteers are expected to be informed and serve as independent objective observers and evaluators of the School Board’s governance. 

By submitting an application, you are agreeing to meet the expectations of A+ Schools, uphold the roles and responsibilities, and follow the code of conduct as a Board Watch volunteer.

Board Watch Volunteer Agreement

Responsibilities

  • Participate in an evening training session.
  • Observe at least one School Board meeting per month over a period of six months.
  • Check the School Board’s Web site (www.pghboe.net) 24 hours prior to the meeting to confirm the time.
  • Arrive at the meeting 15 minutes early, obtain printed agenda and any other available documents, and fill out first section of the report.
  • During the meeting, follow the A+ Schools Code of Conduct (see below).
  • Listen carefully and fill out the tally portions of the report.
  • Following the meeting, total your tally marks, complete the final portion of the report and mail your completed report to A+ Schools within 24 hours.

Code of Conduct

  • Wear your Board Watch badge to identify yourself as an observer.
  • Be courteous and attentive.
  • Do not make comments on behalf of A+ Schools or yourself.
  • Ask questions for clarification after the meeting.
  • Be aware of your role, not as an individual, but as an independent and objective observer volunteering for A+ Schools.

I further agree to do my best to be a keen observer of school board governance for the benefit of the children and youth served by the Pittsburgh Public Schools. I agree to meet the expectations of A+ Schools, uphold the roles and responsibilities and follow the code of conduct as a Board Watch volunteer. I have answered all questions truthfully and to the best of my ability.
