Students Engaged in Leadership
Students Engaged in Leadership is delivered through a series of community partners led by A+ Schools, the Coro Center for Civic Leadership and the Marilyn G Rabb (MGR) Foundation.
The program is designed to educate and empower Pittsburgh Public High School students as participants in high school reform, rather than just as reactors to it. It is our belief that the students are a vital part of the community that, when seen as partners, have the potential to be a force that pushes the improvement of schools to a level unachieved by other urban school districts that are going through similar reforms. For this reason, we have secured a place at the table for the students in the program to be active participants in the district’s community engagement process during this upcoming year.
Students Engaged in Leadership is a student-driven program. As participants, students will work with a team of their peers approximately twice a month over the next 7 months to engage in activities to build the skills necessary to create solutions to the issues that they and their peers care about. Through these activities, students will gain an understanding of community decision making, how the choices made by Pittsburgh Public Schools are made and how they affect the district and how different perspectives within a group can affect the decision making process.
By engaging students in leadership, we seek to support them to develop their voice as informed citizens and empower them to seek to find the most effective ways to create positive change in their communities. Over time, the result will be generations of adults who seek to make informed decisions to lead future Pittsburgh.
The Participants
The 2008 class of Students Engaged in Leadership consists of students who are representatives from high schools and charter schools in the city of Pittsburgh and are currently in the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade. They have been recognized by teachers, administrators or community members as students who, with effective tools and training to unlock their potential, could be the dynamic and thoughtful leaders that influence their peers to make their schools and city the best it could be. Nominated students filled out an application to demonstrate their interest in leadership and desire to join the program and upon review, were invited to participate in the program.
